Lucia: Duke of Edinburgh Volunteer

Lucia lends a hand at Adventure Playground clean-up

Hello Friends of Barnard Park,

I am doing 6 months (24 hours) of volunteering at Barnard Park as part of my Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award.  I am volunteering with the Friends gardening group and have done four hours already. The first two hours we spent pruning rose bushes near the One O’Clock Club.  Instead of discarding branches we trimmed, we used them as a barrier so that dogs and drunks couldn’t disturb the plants.  After we finished pruning, the roses looked much healthier and I felt a sense of accomplishment.

On my second visit, I helped clean out the Adventure Playground in a big ‘Clear up’ session.  We decided to work in the bushes to clear rubbish.  These bushes hadn’t been looked after for a long while so you an imagine what sorts of things we found.  It was my first time attending a group gardening/clearing event and it was a learning experience.  I am really enjoying meeting other members of the community and learning from the gardeners.  I would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to the Friends for taking the time to co-ordinate my volunteering and I am looking forward to the next 20 hours!  Lucia
