Top Community Cop Still on Beat

Sgt. Marcel Baker remains on the job

Budget cuts have been made in local community policing.  As part of the cutbacks, the number of sergeants in Islington’s Safer Neighbourhoods Teams (SNT) have been reduced and will oversee larger areas.  Barnard Park has been fortunate that Sergeant Marcel Baker is still on the job.  Sgt Baker is now in charge of SNT policing in both Barnsbury and Caledonian wards.  Sgt Baker has worked closely with The Friends and park users to make Barnard Park a safer place. Last year Sgt Baker, along with PC Richard Hills and Chris O’Toole, mounted an operation to discourage drug dealing in the park.  The SNT also sponsored a number of positive activities for young people.  As a result of this work, the park has become a more family friendly environment.
