The Friends of Barnard Park are asking for you to support the regeneration of the park. There is yet another hurdle. Please act now – community support will be critical for getting renovation of Barnard Park through the planning process. Construction could actually start in  autumn.

The planning application for Phase One of the Barnard Park scheme is now open for comment. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, May 12, less than a week from now.

The aim of the planning application is to secure approval of a new pitch and flood lighting. Please support the proposed 3G pitch, which provides a modern astro-turf surface to replace the old redgra pitch for better quality play. While the provision for formal sports has been reduced in size, it’s dramatically improved and will be used more. We will also fight for as much free play as possible.

The new plans offer much more space for informal sports. The new village green will create an area for sport and play for younger children and families. A circuit with distance markers and other resurfaced paths will provide a good facility for runners, who can also enjoy the landscape.

So join us to support the new pitch and the Phase One plan. Please comment using this link www.islington.gov.uk/planningsearch to the Council’s website. Here are time saving instructions once you get there.  Page 1 –  fill in the application reference number P2016/1109/FUL and click on search. Page 2 – click on the green application number. Page 3 – click on green ‘Add Comments Here’. Page 4 – finally your comment window.

Aside from sport, the plan creatively addresses other uses, and will be executed on a relatively small budget. There will be a new central hub/seating area. The scheme is in scale with the environment, has imaginative planting to encourage biodiversity, and takes advantage of existing slopes and the park’s view of wide open sky, so rare in crowded Islington.

The drawing at the top of the post provides a quick look at Phase One. To have a good look at the plans, press the ‘related documents’ link at the bottom of the planning application page, then ‘design and access statement 1,2 and 3’.

Please act and comment to planning!
