Kids Take Over the Adventure Playground

Major work is finished on the Adventure Playground structure

After more than a year of hard work, finishing touches are now being put on the high-rise wooden play structure at the Adventure Playground in Barnard Park. This spring young people will participate in hands-on projects in building, design and landscaping to make the space their own.

Bill Coleman, an Adventure Playground worker who is playing an active role in the restoration of the massive playframe, is thrilled that all the major building work is done and that it is now time to get the kids on the job. In upcoming projects, mini-builders will make raised beds for planting and be involved in cladding the new tree house with beautiful sawn strips of timber. Young people will also be involved in installing swings at different heights and spacings. For budding artists, there will be murals to paint.

A landscape crew is also needed. New paths will be made in the forest area with garden areas to be planted up with flowers and vegetables. There are also plans to
get small creatures into the act. The young people will build a bug hotel to provide food for birds and a wormery to raise creepy crawlies to improve the soil.

The Adventure Playground provides supervised adventure play for children ages six to 14. During term time, it is open Tuesday through to Friday, from 4.0pm until 7.0pm, and Saturday from 11.0am until 4.0pm. During holidays, opening hours are from 10.0am until 6.0pm Monday to Friday, and closed at the weekend.
