2016 Pop-Ups Bring the Community Together

Big turnout for the Children’s Playday on June 5

The 2016 pop-up events made for lovely Sundays in Barnard Park. It was great to see the park alive with activities and new ideas.  The Friends of Barnard Park organise the events with the generous participation of council groups, local businesses and charities. The aim of the Sundays is to bring people into the park, have fun and experiment with urban space. The three Sundays were different but all creative.

On June 5, there were 800 visitors enjoying the children’s Big Playday in partnership with the Adventure Playground. Musicians from Oxjam rocked while Londonaise players competed in an international petanque tournament in the pitch. It was perfect summer weather.

The following Sunday June 12 the park celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday. Her majesty was in attendance or someone who looked a lot like park keeper Angela Doocey.  It rained but that did not dampen spirits. Tea and scones were served while the queen crowned the winners of the Scruffs dog show in her gazebo palace. Zasman Vet gave free advice to pet owners.

The finale on June 19 with a focus on horticulture. The park is part of the Open Garden Square Weekend treating visitors to gardening tended by volunteers – the flowers are looking fabulous this year. There was a beautiful garden party stall by Rosehip & Wild. A classical musician serenaded park goers as locals dropped by to chat and sample the last round of cakes at the Friends Cafe.

Thank you to all the volunteers, participants and visitors who made the June events happen. Also many thanks to the Barnsbury Ward Partnership for providing a grant for the pop-ups. We’ll be back next year!
